MS Swaminathan, father of Green Revolution, confers with India’s highest civilian honour

New Delhi, March 30 (ANI): President Droupadi Murmu posthumously conferred Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, upon agronomist MS Swaminathan on March 30. The award was received by MS Swaminathan’s daughter Nitya Rao. This prestigious award recognises his pivotal role in achieving self-reliance in agriculture and modernising it during challenging times.
Trained as a plant geneticist, Swaminathan’s significant contributions to India’s agricultural sector have earned him a reputation as the scientific leader of India’s green revolution movement. His work has been instrumental in the agricultural renaissance of India.
