UN rights council deals with misery in Gaza

Feb 27, 2024

Geneva [Switzerland], February 27: The plight of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip was at the centre of the opening session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday.
Many countries expressed their horror that hundreds of thousands of people there are still not being adequately cared for and protected months after the start of the Israeli military action. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock once again urged the Israeli government to comply with international humanitarian law in its war in Gaza in view of the catastrophic situation of the civilian population.
"Like any other country in the world, Israel has the right to defend itself. Like any other country in the world, it must do so within the framework of international humanitarian law and human rights law," Baerbock said in Geneva. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that humanitarian law recognizes "that terrorizing civilians and depriving them of food, water, and health care is a recipe for endless anger, alienation, extremism and conflict."
