MP Nixon slams health minister for his 'incompetence'

Aug 08, 2020

Dhaka (Bangladesh), Aug 8: Independent lawmaker Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury, widely known as Nixon Chowdhury, has come down hard on Health Minister Zahid Maleque for his "lack of competence" in playing a responsible role in the health sector.
The member of parliament (MP) from Faridpur 4 constituency also dubbed him as an "unsuccessful minister."
Nixon, a nephew of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and great-nephew of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, vented his anger during a virtual discussion on August 5. A clip of his remarks has been making rounds on social media since then.
He said the health minister's name has now become a much discussed one amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
"I think, why should not we [MPs] speak the truth in the parliament in presence of the honourable prime minister, cabinet members and other lawmakers?
"Why could not we speak out standing in front of the honourable prime minister that your [prime minister's] health minister is an incompetent person?" he said.
Nixon criticized the health minister further, saying Zahid had told him that he would have to run around with the project file after he urged the minister to build a trauma centre in his constituency.
He said that a trauma centre is a must as there is an expressway, under the Dhaka-Khulna Highway Project.
"If any accident happens, there is no health facility within 24 to 28 kilometres of the expressway. A victim has to go to Faridpur town, which is 40 kilometres away, and by the time, he/she will die," Nixon said.
The minister and the country's health authorities lately have been under fire, after corruption allegations surfaced involving the Directorate General of Health Services and some private organizations over testing and treatment of Covid-19 -- apart from overall mismanagement.
Until Friday, according to health authorities, the Covid-19 pandemic infected over 250,000 people and killed over 3,300 around the country.
