JSC to pursue Hailam's dismissal through parliament

Dec 02, 2019

Male (Maldives) Dec 02: The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) will be recommending the parliament to dismiss suspended Criminal Court Chief Judge Ahmed Hailam.
At a JSC meeting held Sunday, the commission concluded that Judge Hailam did not possess the disciplinary conduct required of a judge, and made the decision to seek his dismissal through the parliament.
JSC was investigating Judge Hailam over a controversial Victory Day greeting shared by the judge to a social network group of Criminal Court's recreation club.
The image depicted the Victory Day hero, Martyr Hussain Adam dragging President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Parliament Speaker former president Mohamed Nasheed and those convicted for the November 3, 1988 terror attack by a chain locked around their necks.
Hailam apologized for his action and claimed he had not realised the president and the speaker were illustrated in the cartoon.
Then presiding judge over former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's money laundering trial, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) suspended Ahmed Hailam mere hours ahead of a hearing during which a verdict was set to be delivered in the trial.
