Details of Dr. Afrasheem's murder investigation to be revealed

Nov 17, 2019

Male (Maldives) Nov 17: Chairman of the Presidential Commission Investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances Husnu-al-Suood has stated that the details of their investigation on the murder of former Ungoofaaru MP and religious scholar Dr. Afrasheem Ali will be publicized soon.
Dr. Afrasheem was found murdered in the stairwell of his residence on October 2, 2012.
The commission investigated the murder and forwarded their findings to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the Prosecutor General and the Anti-Terrorism Unit last week in the form of a report.
While a summary report on the murder will be read out Sunday's parliamentary sitting, Suood took to Twitter to express his regret on being out of country at the time the government will be publishing the report.
However, he will be holding a press conference after returning from his trip, and will be giving a detailed presentation of the commission's findings, said Suood.
"... so that people can judge what the commission has done," he wrote.
While the government is preparing to publish the commission's report, the contents of the report have already become public. The commission has commenced investigation to identify the source of the leak.
Local medias report that the commission's report reveals that there is no evidence that murder of the MP was politically motivated. According to the report, religious extremists who strongly disagreed with the scholar's ideologies were behind the murder.
However, Dr. Afrasheem's family has rejected the report, stating that it contradicted the initial findings of the police.
