Quito [Ecuador], August 15: Ecuadorian fire brigades on Sunday recovered the bodies of three mountaineers who died while trying to reach the top of the Carihuairazo volcano, rescue services said.
The climbers fell into a 60-meter crevice on Saturday when they were climbing the 5,020-meter Carihuairazo, an extinct volcano in the western Andes mountain range.
The deceased included a 47-year-old woman and two men between 45 and 50, said the Integrated Security Service ECU 911.
Twelve people were injured in the incident. All of them have been rescued and evacuated to nearby hospitals.
ECU 911 said in a statement that the incident was reported on Saturday morning through a call to emergency services and the location of the mountaineers was determined through a geolocation system.
Due to weather conditions and nightfall, the bodies of the three deceased could not be recovered on Saturday before work resumed on Sunday morning.
